More Riches than Powerball

“Hello, I’m pleased to report that you just won the lottery!” Come on, admit it. Have you ever wondered what you would do if you heard those words spoken to you? How would you feel? Where would you go? Instantly before you is a life of leisure and financial security—a permanent vacation, worry-free. Just imagine it!

Followers of Jesus have received news that makes the Powerball lottery seem like a speck of sand in the Arabian Desert.

It’s called “good news of great joy” (Luke 2:10), or just “the gospel.”

Peter, a friend and eyewitness of Jesus, wrote, “In his great mercy he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade—kept in heaven for you” (1 Pet 1:3-4).

Paul, another eyewitness of Jesus, said, “I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe” (Eph 1:18-19).

God, the Supreme Ruler and Creator of the universe, is infinitely good and holy. He created you and me in his own image to display that goodness and glory to the world. But we have—each one of us—ignored him, revolted against him, bringing down God’s righteous wrath (his just fury, his good anger) upon us. We are all by nature hopelessly condemned because of the ways we have lived our lives—the things we have thought and done.

But the good news is that God is a Rescuer. He sent his own Son—Jesus, the Messiah—into the world to save sinners. The Son of God, through whom the galaxies were created, entered human history! He took on human flesh and lived a perfect life among us, in sinless obedience to his Father’s commands. And Jesus chose to die on the cross for lawbreakers, sinners like us. He suffered and bore the wrath of his Father in the place of anyone who would ever repent of his sins (turn from them) and place his faith (trust) in the Lord, Jesus Christ.

God accepted this sacrifice. How can we be sure? God raised his Son bodily from the dead! And Jesus has now ascended into heaven where he reigns as King of the universe, waiting until the right time to return for his people.

Here is the treasure: followers of Jesus are not merely forgiven, but family. We have been brought back into a priceless relationship with our heavenly Father, the Creator of all things. We call him “Abba, Father!” He accepts us and loves us—not because of anything we have done—but because of the righteousness and sacrifice of His Son for us. We have now been freed from slavery to sin and united to Jesus Christ. So, we have received an inheritance, a treasure that can never be taken away. Even now, all true believers enjoy a down payment through the gift of the Holy Spirit, whom Paul calls “the guarantee of our inheritance” (Eph 1:14).

The day is coming when faith will give way to sight. We will be with him. As the Bible promises, “They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God” (Rev 21:3). God is the treasure. He surpasses the Powerball lottery ($1.6 billion) by an infinite order of magnitude, and he is ours forever, only through Jesus Christ.

Though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.
